Box-Office Weekend: “Avatar: The Way of Water” Still #1
It’s lucky number seven for Avatar: The Way of Water as the film stood firm atop the box-office weekend for the seventh consecutive weekend, as it continued to climb the list of highest domestic grossing films of all time.
Adding $15.7 million over the weekend, lifted Avatar: The Way of Water to the eleventh spot on the aforementioned list. With a total of $620.6 million, the film just passed Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi and Incredibles 2 as it readies itself for an assault on the top ten. The Way of Water also finished $5.1 million ahead of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish which stood firm in second place with $10.6 million, bringing its six-week total to $140.8 million. Meanwhile, A Man Called Otto hopped up two spots to claim third place over the weekend with $6.8 million. This gives the Tom Hanks film a five-week total of $46.1 million. That film’s leap of two spots pushed M3GAN to fourth place with $6.4 million. However, the horror film has still managed to bring in $82.3 million over its first four weeks in release. Debuting in fifth place was Pathaan with $5.9 million over the weekend and $8.5 million during its first week in release.
Falling two spots to sixth place was Missing which managed $5.7 million over the weekend, bringing its two-week total to $17.6 million. This forced Plane to lose a place and finish in seventh with $3.8 million to show for its third weekend in release. The film now sports an overall total of $25.4 million. Debuting in eighth place was Infinity Pool with $2.7 million. Just behind that was the debut of Left Behind: Rise of the Antichrist in ninth place with $2.4 million over the weekend and a $3.0 million opening overall. Finally, in its second week of release, The Wandering Earth II cracked the top ten and finished with $1.4 million to claim the final spot of the weekend top ten.
Four films were pushed from the top ten this weekend by new arrivals. After three weeks, House Party departs with an overall total of $7.8 million. Despite making its debut in the top ten last weekend in the eighth spot, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime the Movie: Scarlet Bond (Gekijôban Tensei shitara slime datta ken) failed to crack the top ten this weekend, only lifting its final total to $1.6 million. The Whale swam out of the top ten in its eighth weekend of release after bringing its overall total to $14.9 million. Finally, after twelve weeks, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever departed the top ten with a grand total of $453 million, placing it in twenty-fourth place on the earlier referenced list of highest grossing domestic films of all time.
