Box-Office Weekend: Sonic Takes Over

A new film claimed the top spot of the box-office weekend as Sonic the Hedgehog 3 debuted this week $27 million ahead of its closest competition.

“Sonic the Hedgehog 3” posterParamount Pictures saw its latest offering, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 take control of the box-office weekend top ten by bringing in $62 million during its first weekend in release. This easily bested second-place finisher Mufasa: The Lion King which debuted in second place with $35 million for Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. Meanwhile, last week’s second-place film, Wicked dropped to third place where it took in $13.5 million for Universal Pictures to lift its five-week total to $383.9 million. Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures also saw Moana 2 fall from first to fifth place as it brought in $13.1 million this weekend, lifting its four-week tally to $359.1 million. Angel Studios enjoyed a debut in fifth place for Homestead where it brought in $6.1 million for the studio.

Gladiator II dropped two spots as it landed in sixth place this weekend where it took in $4.5 million for Paramount Pictures, bringing it five-week total to $153.9 million. Meanwhile, last weekend’s number three film, Kraven: The Hunter dropped four spots to claim seventh place this week with $3.1 million, giving the Sony Pictures Releasing product a two-week total of $17.4 million. In its second week of release, the Warner Bros. offering of The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim fell three spots to land in eighth place this weekend where it added $1.3 million, bringing its overall total to $7.4 million for the studio. Last weekend’s tenth-place film, Lionsgate’s The Best Christmas Pageant Ever climbed a spot to take over ninth place this weekend with $825,000, giving it a seven-week total of $38.5 million. Finally, A24 saw Queer climb into the top ten in its fourth weekend of release with $363,240 earned over the weekend, giving the film an overall total of $2.8 million.

Four films were forced from the top ten this weekend as last week’s sixth- through ninth-place films all dropped from this weekend’s list. After five weeks, Red One departs with a total of $92.5 million. Meanwhile, Pushpa: The Rule – Part 2 failed to make the cut as well after bringing in $13 million over the course of the last two weeks. The re-release of Interstellar managed to amass $15.2 million during its two week run, but fell from the top ten this weekend. Finally, after just one weekend, Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem misses the top ten after bringing in a total of $2.3 million.
