Box-Office Weekend: Thunderbolts are #1

After two weeks on top of the box-office weekend, Sinners succumbed to the premiere of Thunderbolts* and was pushed out of the number one spot by $43 million.

“Thunderbolts*” posterIn its first weekend of release, the Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures release of the latest Marvel film, Thunderbolts* took in $76.0 million dollars and easily claimed first place at the box office. Meanwhile, Warner Bros. saw Sinners relegated to second place where it added $33.0 million in its third weekend of release to bring its overall total to $179.7 million. Holding its ground in third place, A Minecraft Movie made $13.7 million during its fifth weekend in release to give the Warner Bros. product a grand total of $398.2 million. After claiming second place last weekend, the Amazon MGM Studios release The Accountant 2 lost two spots this weekend, finishing in fourth with $9.5 million. This brings the film’s two-week total to $41.2 million. Dropping one spot to land in fifth place was Until Dawn with $3.8 million taken in over the last three days. This gives the Screen Gems product a two-week total of $14.4 million.

Holding its ground in sixth place, The Amateur made $1.8 million for 20th Century Studios, giving the film a four-week tally of $36.9 million. Meanwhile, Angel Studios saw The King of Kings fall from fifth to seventh place where it added $1.7 million, bringing its four-week total to $57.7 million. This, of course, pushed A24’s Warfare from seventh- to eighth-place this weekend, where it added $1.3 million, giving it a four-week total of $24.1 million. Debuting in ninth place, Prathyangira Cinemas’ HIT: The 3rd Case made $955,000 during its first weekend in release. Just behind that, Guru Nanak Jahaz brought in $685,000 as it claimed the final spot of this weekend’s top ten.

Three films dropped from the top ten this weekend. After a week in re-release and claiming second place last weekend, Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith could not crack the top ten again this weekend and had to settle for a $34.1 million intake for the twentieth anniversary re-release. Last weekend’s ninth- and tenth-place films both fell from this weekend’s list as the release of Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii didn’t make this week’s list after snagging $2.6 million last weekend; and A24’s The Legend of Ochi dropped from the top ten sporting a three-week total of $2.2 million.
