A Kid Film Critic Reviews Pixels

What We Didn't Like
Pixels is one of the best movies I have ever seen. The movie starts out with thirteen-year-old Brenner (Anthony Ippolito) and his friend Cooper (Jared Riley) who like to play arcade video games. They decide to enter Brenner in an arcade gaming competition because he is great at them. When Brenner loses to his arch nemesis, Fire Blaster (Andrew Bambridge), and is devastated. The movie then jumps to when the kids are grownup and they find out that aliens are coming to destroy them with real life versions of the video games they used to play. Brenner’s gaming knowledge finally pays off because now he needs it to save the world. Will he fail or will he succeed?
The 3D was amazing. I am not a fan of every movie coming out these days being made in 3D. However, they made Pixels come to life by adding 3D. I felt like I was in the movie the whole time. The action scenes were more exciting because of pixels and debris flying right at you. This is unusual these days because no one does good 3D, but Pixels did it great. I really recommend you watch this movie in 3D.
One of my favorite things about this movie is the comedy – it was hilarious. The trailer is a good preview of some of the humor. Pixels has great one liners like, “Don’t tell anyone I killed a Smurf.” The part where the “Worst Nightmare” dude (A.K.A. Ludlow played by Josh Gad) was funny because Ludlow was trying to be all tough in front of a group of military jocks when he obviously is not a tough man. Also, Adam Sandler does a great job keeping the audience laughing throughout the whole movie.
Sandler really made the film and he was my favorite actor in this movie. Sandler plays grown-up Brenner. Brenner is a video arcade game expert living in the past. He is great at what he does, but he never tried for anything more after coming in second at that video game competition. Brenner is a funny, kind-hearted man who tries his best, but often messes up. While himself and others often underestimate him, he turns out to be smart and brave in the end.
One of the nice touches in the film was the addition of Q*bert. Q*bert is an animated character from a 1980s video game who makes an appearance in the film. He is adorable, sweet, and funny. He is orange, pixilated, and has a long nose. Q*bert plays a small part in the film, but he really adds a lot and is vital to the ending.
Another thing I liked was how well they brought the animated video games into the real world. The special effects were wonderful. Pixilated things blended well with real world objects without the whole film coming off as cartoony. The pixels did not seem out of place. Even though the idea of the movie is very unrealistic, the effects made it feel real. This is an amazing movie. If you are a fan of video games and humor, this is the movie for you. Teenagers and adults will both enjoy Pixels.
