Box-Office Weekend: Black Panther Wins Easily
With an estimated $192 million for the three-day weekend, the latest entry to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Black Panther, easily topped the weekend box office finishing nearly $175 million ahead of the film in second place. This tremendous holiday showing also makes director Ryan Coogler’s super hero epic the second-largest opening in the MCU to date (trailing only the $207.4 million brought in by Josh Whedon’s The Avengers).
The animated Peter Rabbit finished in a distant second place with $17.3 million, giving that film a two-week total of $48.2 million). Fifty Shades Freed fell from first to third, earning $16.9 million, which is approximately $60 million less than it made it its initial elongated week of release. Elsewhere, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle held onto fourth place for a second straight week adding $7.9 million to raise its nine-week total to $377.6 million.
Last week’s third-place finisher, The 15:17 to Paris, dropped all the way to the fifth spot, but still brought in $7.7 million. Similarly, The Greatest Showman, dropped from fifth to sixth, but did successfully raise its nine-week total to $154.5 million with $5.1 million this past weekend. The week’s other notable new release, Early Man, managed to lure enough filmgoers to earn $3.2 million, landing it in a decidedly disappointing seventh place. Maze Runner: The Death Cure meanwhile fell down the list as well in its fourth week of release with a $2.5 million weekend. The horror film Winchester, managed to illicit enough scares to bring in $2.2 million to give it a three-week total of $21.9 million, before more than likely, leaving the top ten next week.
Finally, the week’s third new release, Samson, finished in the tenth spot with $2 million. With Monday’s holiday, the overall weekend totals should climb even higher for Black Panther and possibly for a few of the other films currently in the top ten. Next week, expect the box office to shake up yet again as the comedy mystery Game Night opens against the Sci-Fi horror film Annihilation.
