Box Office Weekend: Captain America Winters On Top Again
Captain America: The Winter Soldier needs no introductions, mostly because this is the third time it has held the box office. Its estimated $26.6 million was enough to hold off three new releases (which appeared to have underwhelmed critics) as well as push it into domestic profitability (while having passed half a billion worldwide). Rio 2 held up well for a second weekend with an estimated $22.5 million and looks to be on track for a net profit despite its critical reception.
The three new releases clumped up in the middle, and while none of them have sat well with critics, two of them have already made a profit while one looks to bomb quite heavily. The $12 million Heaven is for Real made an estimated $21.5 million, and the Marlon Wayans sequel A Haunted House 2 managed to pick up an estimated $9.1 million, which would sound poor if it were not for its $4 million budget. However, the Johnny Depp-led Transcendence, a $100 million blockbuster, only managed an estimated $11.2 million, and is unlikely to do much better even with overseas gross.
Draft Day entered its second week with a fairly poor performance with an estimated $5.9 million and $19.5 million domestically, and is likely still not reporting its costs for that reason alone. Divergent (estimated $5.8 million), Oculus (estimated $5.2 million), and God’s Not Dead (estimated $4.8 million), on the other hand, have all proven not simply successful, but very successful on their own merits, while Noah (estimated $5 million) is not quite profitable on domestic shores, but has done much better worldwide with $290.7 million on total earnings.
