Box Office Weekend: Dunkirk Claims Box Office

Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk took the weekend box office this weekend, earning over $50 million. Another new release, Girls Trip, finished in second with $30.4 million. This week’s other new release, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets only managed to pull in $17 million, which relegated it to fifth place.

DunkirkThe $50 million opening for Dunkirk, more than likely foretells a lengthy and profitable run for the film, as many of Nolan’s films have followed a very similar pattern. The strong opening for the $19 million budgeted Girls Trip suggests a sequel won’t be too far off as similarly performing properties from producer Will Packer have followed a similar path.

This week’s third-place film, Spider-Man: Homecoming managed to ensnare $22 million to bring its domestic total to slightly over $251 million (it’s global total is an impressive $570 million). War for the Planet of the Apes added an additional $20.4 million, a drop of 64% from its first week of release, to bring the film’s two-week domestic total to $97.8 million

Luc Besson’s science-fiction epic, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets brought in $17 million, which was good enough for fifth place, but probably not good enough for a production with a budget reportedly somewhere between $150 and $180 million, though it has yet to open overseas, where it will more than likely make more than it has stateside. The animated Despicable Me 3 added another $12.7 million to bring its cumulative total to $213.3 million domestically and a global total of $727.4 million.

The seven through nine finishers were separated by about a million dollars each, making the bottom part of this week’s top ten a very tight race. The action film from writer/director Edgar Wright, Baby Driver, finished in seventh with $6 million, which brought the film’s four-week total to $84.2 million. The Big Sick finished in eight place with $5 million (and a five-week total of $24.5 million). Wonder Woman added another $4.6 million to its $389 million cumulative total, landing it firmly in ninth place. Finally, the poorly-reviewed horror film Wish Upon took in another $2.5 million, bringing its two-week total to $10.5 million as it no doubt prepares to bid the Top Ten farewell in the very near future.
