Box-Office Weekend: Guardians Debut On Top


After four weekends, there is a new film stop the box-office weekend top ten as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 claimed the top spot, pushing The Super Mario Bros. Movie to second place.

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" posterDebuting with $114.0 million over its opening weekend, the third film in the “Guardians of the Galaxy” series easily took the top spot of the weekend, finishing $95.4 million ahead of second-place finisher The Super Mario Bros. Movie which still brought in $18.6 million, to raise its five-week total to $518.1 million. Evil Dead Rise was relegated to a third-place finish with $5.7 million over the weekend. The film now sports a three-week total of $54.1 million. In its second-weekend of release, Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret dropped to fourth place with $3.4 million; this still gives the film an overall total of $12.6 million. Landing in fifth place with $2.4 million over the weekend was John Wick: Chapter 4. This gives the sequel a four-week total of $180.1 million.

Debuting in sixth place this weekend with $2.2 million, was the Love Again. Meanwhile, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves fell a spot to finish in seventh place with $1.5 million over the weekend. The film now lays claim to a six-week total of $92.0 million. Air also dropped a spot to finish in eighth over the weekend with $1.4 million. This gives the film a five-week total of $50.2 million. Meanwhile, Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant again finished in ninth-place with $1.2 million over the weekend, bringing its three-week total to $14.8 million. Finally, holding steady in the tenth spot was Sisu with $1.1 million, giving the film a two-week total of $5.5 million.

Two films that debuted in the top ten last weekend were pushed out this weekend by newcomers as both the re-release of Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi and Ponniyin Selvan: Part Two enjoyed only one weekend in the top ten before departing.
