Box-Office Weekend: Fifty Shades Freed On Top
Surprisingly, the top three spots of this weekend’s box office belonged to three new releases. First, the latest (and presumably last) film in the “Fifty Shades” franchise, Fifty Shades Freed, debuted in the number one spot with $38.8 million. This pushed the franchise over the $1 billion mark globally—an impressive feat for any franchise, despite the disputed critical quality of it. The family-friendly (for the most part) Peter Rabbit brought in $25 million over the weekend, which was good enough for second place. Finally, the Clint Eastwood-directed action film The 15:17 to Paris debuted in third place with $12.6 million.
Fourth place was claimed by last week’s first-place finisher and recent box-office juggernaut Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, which added another $9.8 million to raise its eight-week total to $365.7 million. Elsewhere, The Greatest Showman took fifth place with $6.4 million, giving it an eight-week total of $146.5 million. Maze Runner: The Death Cure fell from second to sixth earning a sparse $6 million over the weekend for a three-week total of $49 million.
The horror film Winchester made $5.1 million to raise its two-week take up to $17.2 million, which must be disappointing somebody, somewhere. Meanwhile, eighth and ninth place belong to awards-darlings The Post ($3.5 million) and The Shape of Water ($3 million), both of which have seen some added business as the nominations for various awards piled up for both in recent weeks.
Finally, the tenth spot in this week’s box-office countdown belongs to Den of Thieves, which brought in $2.9 million, giving it a $41 million total for four weeks. Next week should see a similar shake-up in the box office finishers as the Disney/Marvel action film Black Panther is released along with Aardman’s Early Man, both of which will undoubtedly knock one of this week’s top ten finishers off next week’s list.
