Box Office Weekend: Martian Tops Worst Box Office Weekend of 2015

While Halloween weekend tends to be a slower weekend than usual, it proved to be the slowest weekend of the year at the box office (at least so far). So slow, in fact, that the top three films include two winners and two potential box-office flops. The Martian is a worldwide hit, earning an estimated $11.4 million on the weekend, but Goosebumps, with an The Martianestimated $10.2 million, has a long ways to go before breaking even, as does Bridge of Spies (estimated $8.1 million), despite all three films getting good reviews.

Hotel Transylvania 2 is the only other obvious success story of the list, an estimated $5.8 million bringing it to $156 million in domestic earnings alone (and a sight more than that worldwide). Burnt, on the other hand, is looking ahead to flop big, regardless of its unreported budget. Opening at an estimated $5 million, the Bradley Cooper comedy about a chef on a comeback is likely not going to make back its costs anytime soon…and things do not look good for The Last Witch Hunter, either, as the effects-laden action horror pulled in an estimated $4.8 million for $18.6 million overall.

Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension seeks to end the current run of the franchise on a whimper, not a bang; while it still could potentially make money with its $13.6 million so far (estimated $3.5 million on the weekend), it is still the worst performing film of the series, and by a wide margin (it has so far made less in total than the previous film made in its opening weekend). Sandra Bullock also has one of the worst openings of her career in Our Brand is Crisis, getting mostly poor reviews and an estimated $3.4 million in revenue for a film that (wisely) is keeping its budget under wraps. Finally, even the critically acclaimed have been having it rough, as Crimson Peak (estimated $3.1 million) is flopping badly at $27.7 million in revenue against $55 million in budget costs, while Steve Jobs earned an estimated $2.6 million and is barely at half of its $30 million budget in earnings.
