Box-Office Weekend: Midway Tops Veterans’ Day Box Office

Four films debuted in theaters this weekend and those same four films took the top four spots in the box-office weekend countdown. For this weekend at least, bragging rights for the top spot goes to the Veterans’ Day themed Midway, which took in $17.5 million.

Elsewhere, the horror-film Doctor Sleep debuted in second place just behind Midway, with an opening weekend tally of $14.1 million. Meanwhile, the family-friendly Playing with Fire enjoyed a $12.8 million opening weekend and the romantic, holiday-themed comedy Last Christmas made $11.6 million during its first weekend in theaters.

Midway posterDropping from first-place last week to fifth this was the science-fiction sequel Terminator: Dark Fate, which managed to add $10.8 million in a crowded weekend, giving the sequel a two-week total of $48.5 million. Joker, meanwhile, finished in sixth place—dropping from second last week—adding another $9.2 million to its considerable bank so far, which now stands at $313.5 million over the last six weeks.

Meanwhile, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil dropped from third to seventh place with $8 million over the weekend, to give the sequel a four-week total of $97.3 million. The action-oriented, biopic Harriet, enjoyed a $7.2 million weekend in its second week of release, giving it a total of $23.5 million over that period, despite the drop from fourth to eighth place in the top ten.

One of several sequels in this week’s top ten, Zombieland: Double Tap took in $4.3 million in its fourth week of release, raising the film’s domestic take to $66.7 million. Finally, the animated incarnation of The Addams Family, despite dropping from fifth place to the final spot in this week’s countdown, made $4.2 million over the weekend, to give the film a five-week tally of $91.5 million, practically ensuring that a sequel is at least being discussed.

A few films departed the top ten this weekend, undoubtedly due to the success to the aforementioned top four new releases. The horror film Countdown leaves after three weeks in release amassing a $22.2 million purse. Similarly, the crime drama Black and Blue leaves the top ten after three weeks as well, earning a disappointing $19.1 million. Meanwhile, Edward Norton’s Motherless Brooklyn took in only $7.4 million it first two weeks of release before dropping from the top ten. Finally, the animated Arctic Dogs runs away from the top ten after amassing only $4.9 million.

Next weekend boasts the arrival of Matt Damon and Christian Bale in Ford v. Ferrari as well as the latest incarnation of Charlie’s Angels (this one directed by Elizabeth Banks) and The Good Liar starring Helen Mirren and Ian McKellen.
