As is becoming old hat, a new film has taken hold of the box-office weekend top ten as Resident Evil brought in $47.8 million more than its closest competitor.
In its first weekend of release, Resident Evil brought in a total of $60.0 million for Columbia Pictures. This proved more than enough to swipe the top spot from Prectical Magic 2, which was relegated to second place where it brought in $12.2 million for Warner Bros., giving the film a two-week total of $50.0 million. Meanwhile, Sony Pictures Releasing saw its Spider-Man: Brand New Day drop to third place where it made $6.5 million for the studio to lift its eight-week tally to $944.5 million. Universal Pictures then saw The Odyssey fall a spot to fourth place as it brought in $4.9 million to bring the film’s ten-week total to $609.8 million for the studio. Holding its ground in fifth place, Coyote vs. Acme added $4.5 million to give the Ketchup Entertainment release a four-week total of $54.8 million.
Sixth place was claimed by Runner with $3.2 million after that film fell from fourth place a week ago – this brings the film’s two-week total to $12.1 million. Meanwhile, EKKL Entertainment’s Daniel and the Fiery Furnace debuted in seventh place with $3.14 million. This proved to be just enough to beat out the fortieth anniversary re-release of The Transformers: The Movie which took eighth place with $3.10 million over the weekend. Vertical Entertainment saw its The Weight debut in ninth place with $2.3 million earned over the weekend. Finally, after claiming sixth place last weekend, Buddy fell to tenth place this week where it brought in $1.9 million for Roadside Attractions, giving the film a four-week total of $24.8 million.
Again, four films were forced out of the top ten this weekend as the films that finished in seventh through eighth place last weekend all fell from this week’s top ten. After five weeks in release, Insidious: Out of the Further managed to bring in a total of $63.8 million for Sony Pictures Releasing before dropping out of the top ten. Meanwhile, Neon’s Hope managed to amass a total of $7.3 million over the previous two weeks before also falling from the top ten. Focus Features saw The Uprising bring in a total of $5.8 million over the last two weeks before failing to crack the top ten this weekend. Finally, with a three-week total of $15.3 million, the Paramount Pictures release By Any Means also left the top ten behind this weekend.
