Box-Office Weekend: Shang-Chi Maintains Stranglehold on Top Spot


The latest film from Marvel, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, retained the top spot of the box-office weekend by earning $30 million more than the film in second place.

This week, the film took in $35.8 million to give it an impressive two-week tally of $145.6 million. The Ryan Reynolds vehicle Free Guy climbed a spot this week to finish in second by adding $5.8 million to give the film a five-week total of $101.8 million. Meanwhile, the first of the debuts this passed weekend, the horror film Malignant took third place just behind Free Guy with $5.6 million. Falling two spots down to fourth place was the second horror film in the top ten, Candyman, which now has a three-week total of $48 million after taking in $4.8 million over the weekend.

Holding steady in the fifth spot was Disney’s Jungle Cruise, which added $2.5 million to give the film a seven-week total of $109.9 million. PAW Patrol: The Movie, however, dropped two spots to finish in sixth place over the weekend, garnering only $2.2 million while tallying a four-week total of $34.6 million. Falling just one spot to finish in seventh place in the third horror film in this week’s top ten, the sequel Don’t Breather 2. The film took in $1.2 million in its fifth weekend of release to give it a total so far of $30.2 million. The second debut of the weekend, the thriller The Card Counter finished in the eighth spot earning $1.1 million. The weekend’s final debut, the documentary Show Me the Father finished in the ninth spot with $700,000.

Finally, dropping from seven to the tenth spot in the weekend box-office, was the musical biopic of Aretha Franklin, Respect, which added $503,000 to give it a five-week total of $23.1 million.
