Box Office Weekend: Slow Fourth Gives Transformers a Leg Up

A lot fewer people went to see Transformers: Age of Extinction this weekend than last, with the blockbuster losing massive business as it garnered only an estimated $36.4 million this weekend at the box office. However, not too many people went to go see much else this weekend either, as the next highest earner, the Melissa McCarthy comedy Tammy, only managed to bring in an estimated $21.2 million. Still, it was enough to cover its $20 million budget, and while perhaps not the moneymaker that Neighbors was, the critically panned comedy should still be a modest success.

Transformers: Age of ExtinctionDeliver Us from Evil, however, has what is probably an uphill battle, the horror film brought in only an estimated $9.5 million for its opening weekend; with critics not exactly singing its praises and a lack of released budget numbers, it seems doomed for mediocrity at best. The only other film to debut this week, Earth to Echo, did not even make it into the top five, an estimated $8.3 million giving the family film a poor start (with mixed reviews unlikely to help).

Both 22 Jump Street and How to Train Your Dragon 2 held off the rest, with estimates of $9.4 million and $8.8 million respectively, and while 22 Jump Street is a resounding success, How to Train Your Dragon 2 still seeks to break even domestically. So, too, does Jersey Boys, with an estimated $5.2 million pushing it to within spitting distance of its $40 million costs, but it still took a back seat this weekend to Maleficent, which added to its pile of cash with an estimated $6.1 million. Maleficent takes the distinction this week of being the highest earner on the list both domestically and abroad (at least, for a little while longer).

Finally, Think Like a Man Too will leave a success, but what a fall it has been, going from first to ninth in a matter of three weeks, picking up an estimated $4.9 million, while Edge of Tomorrow, despite good reviews and excellent worldwide take, will leave as a domestic failure, an estimated $3.6 million leaving it well short of its $178 million budget.
