Box Office Weekend: Spy Biggest Hit of Slow June Start
If May started big and ended low, then maybe the opening lull of June will rise as the big hits of the summer start to arrive. It does look like a good time will be had by Spy; the Melissa McCarthy-starring, Paul Feig-directed action comedy is winning critics and audiences alike, opening with an estimated $30 million (though not releasing its costs as of yet). San Andreas slid to second with an estimated $26.4 million, but the action epic, even with no released budget numbers, is closing in on $100 million domestically. However, two other releases came in with little fanfare (or box office draw). The fairly well-received Insidious: Chapter 3 made an estimated $23 million, while the big screen adaptation of the TV show Entourage fared less well with an estimated $10.4 million and little for critics to recommend.
While Mad Max: Fury Road struggles domestically with an estimated $8 million at the box office, it has done good business worldwide and has brought in over $300 million in total gross. Pitch Perfect 2, on the other hand, has long overshadowed its predecessor, an estimated $7.7 million adding to a $161 million domestic total…and if it cost even slightly more than the original and its $17 million budget, it is beyond successful.
Tomorrowland continues its downward spiral with an estimated $7.7 million, falling well short worldwide of its $190 million costs, while Avengers: Age of Ultron, with its estimated $6.2 million, casts a long shadow over it with $438 million in domestic revenue and $1.3 billion worldwide.
Finally, Aloha and Poltergeist, both critical failures, appear to be destined to low box office take as well, earning an estimated $3.3 million and $2.9 million respectively. While Poltergeist has an edge with $44.5 million earned domestically so far, it also has not released budget info, spelling bad news for the effects-laden remake.
