Box Office Weekend: Star Wars Wins Again, Though Revenant Strong Competition
Star Wars: The Force Awakens has had a busy week, surpassing Avatar as the highest-grossing domestic film of all-time as well as having a $51 million opening in China, and it shows little sign of slowing down with an estimated $41.6 million weekend take. Leonardo DiCaprio had a strong wide release weekend as well, with an estimated $38 million for The Revenant. However, the well-regarded frontier epic has a price tag of $135 million, meaning it has a lot of ground to cover to make back its costs.
Daddy’s Home has proven surprisingly resilient despite lackluster reviews, falling to third with an estimated $15 million, but has topped $116.3 million in domestic revenue. The Forest, too, has not had much critical praise, but at an estimated $13.1 million on a $10 million budget, it has little ground to cover to make itself profitable, if not well received.
Sisters has shown solid numbers with an estimated $7.1 million, earning $74.9 million on a $30 million production cost, while Quentin Tarantino is finding middling success with The Hateful Eight, whose $6.4 million weekend has brought in $41.5 million against its $44 million costs.
The Big Short did not do much moving around on the list (remaining in seventh), but an estimated $6.3 million brought it up to $42.9 million against $28 million in costs. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip, on the other hand, slipped three spots with an estimated $5.5 million, and remains the lowest earning movie in the Chipmunks franchise with $75.6 million brought, about half of the last one.
In ninth, Joy still has ground to make up on its $60 million costs with an estimated $4.5 million ($46.6 million earned in total), but Concussion is perhaps clinging to an Oscar nod to improve its fortunes…though it has less to make up with than Joy with $35 million in costs, its estimated $3.1 million weekend has only added up to $31 million in total gross so far.
