Box Office Weekend: Suicide Squad Holds for Third Week

Suicide Squad may have been a critical dud, but the DC villains may be having the last laugh, holding onto first place for a third week in a row with an estimated $20.7 million weekend and $572.7 million in worldwide take. In second, Sausage Party remained a large draw for the R rated crowd with an estimated $15.3 million weekend and $65.3 million in domestic total, an excellent take so far for a film that only cost $19 million to make, and with the opportunity to make even more.

Suicide Squad PosterThe third- thru fifth-place finishers, all new to the list, ride the gamut from critical praise to critical trashing, but they all have a common issue – rough opening weekends. War Dogs rode it out best (arguably, considering it has no reported budget) with an estimated $14.3 million and lukewarm critical praise, beating out the critically acclaimed Kubo and the Two Strings. The $60 million production opened with an estimated $12.6 million weekend. In fifth, Ben-Hur could not live up to its illustrious name, as critical panning also led to a lackluster opening, with an estimated $11.4 million for the weekend against a $100 million budget.

Pete’s Dragon slipped to sixth with an estimated $11.3 million, struggling to earn back its $65 million despite earning high critical marks. Bad Moms (estimated $8.1 million) and Jason Bourne (estimated $8 million), in the meantime, have been successes at the box office, but Jason Bourne has only broken even thanks to worldwide gross (though it is now the third most successful film in the franchise, both domestically and abroad).

In the final two slots, The Secret Life of Pets is slowing down in earnings with an estimated $5.8 million, but remains the most successful film in the current top ten with $346.7 million, while Florence Foster Jenkins held onto the tenth place spot with an estimated $4.3 million, earning $14.4 million so far on an unreported budget.
