Box-Office Weekend: Tom Cruise on Top Again
After ceding the top spot of the box-office weekend to Jurassic World Dominion for the last two weeks, Tom Cruise and Top Gun: Maverick bested Elvis by the slimmest of margins to claim the top of the box-office weekend.
In its fifth weekend of release, Top Gun: Maverick reclaimed the top of the box-office weekend with $30,500,176 over the weekend. This was just enough to relegate newcomer Elvis to second place with $30,500,000. Meanwhile, last week’s first-place film, Jurassic World Dominion finished in third place with $26.4 million to bring its three-week total to $302.8 million. The second debut of the weekend, the horror film The Black Phone landed just behind that in fourth place with $23.4 million to show for its opening weekend. This dropped Lightyear to fifth place with $17.7 million after a second-place finish last weekend. The Disney/Pixar film now has a two-week total of $88.8 million.
Falling two spots to finish in sixth place was the Marvel film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness which added $1.7 million over the weekend to bring its eight-week total to $409.2 million. The film is now the 34th highest grossing domestic film. The third debut in the top ten of the weekend was the Indian Jug Jugg Jeeyo which made $725,000 in its first weekend of release. This pushed last weekend’s seventh-place finisher, Everything Everywhere All at Once to the eighth spot with $533,000. This gives the film a fourteen-week total of $66.1 million. Falling from fifth to ninth place was The Bob’s Burgers Movie which added $513,000 over the weekend to bring its five-week total to $31.0 million. Finally, last weekend’s sixth place film, The Bad Guys dropped to the tenth spot this weekend with $440,000. This gives the film a ten-week tally of $95.5 million.
Three films dropped out of the box-office top ten this weekend. The final three films in last weekend’s top ten were all pushed from this week’s list as Downton Abbey: A New Era (with $43.3 million over six weeks), Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (with $190.7 million over twelve weeks), and Brian and Charles ($389,900 over four weeks) all departed.
