Box Office Weekend: Tomorrowland Wins Memorial Day “Weak-End”
How did Disney and the star power of George Clooney do this weekend? The answer, a big resounding “meh.” Despite costing $190 million, the next Disney summer blockbuster led a very lackluster Memorial Day weekend, earning only an estimated $41.7 million. In comparison, Pitch Perfect 2 made an estimated $38.5 million for its second weekend, and has broken past the $100 million mark in revenue. Even compared to the middling domestic performance of Mad Max: Fury Road (which took in an estimated $32.1 million), Tomorrowland has not been released internationally, while overseas Fury Road is doing decent business.
The remake of Poltergeist (estimated $25.5 million) came in below Avengers: Age of Ultron (estimated $27.8 million), but comparing the two beyond that is apples and oranges; while critics have lambasted Poltergeist, Avengers: Age of Ultron has become the biggest domestic success of the year so far with $411 million in revenue).
Beyond that, no film broke $5 million in weekend take. Hot Pursuit kept its bomb status with an estimated $4.6 million while Furious 7, one of the furthest things from a bomb, slid with an estimated $2.8 million. While it will have to be content for second place in earnings for 2015, Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 is just happy to be breaking even with an estimated $2.5 million, ensuring the poorly received comedy will see a few dollars beyond its budget costs.
Finally, Home will soon be able to put its success to bed, landing in ninth with an estimated $2.4 million adding to a worldwide $346.6 million total, while The Age of Adaline and its estimated $1.9 million remains a mystery…at least, somewhat. While still not reporting budget numbers, its estimated $40.4 million in revenue is likely a successful run for the romantic drama, if its numbers are anything like that of Woman in Gold.
