Box-Office Weekend: Weapons Leads Shake-Up

A new film took over the box-office weekend as Weapons debuted in first place by a margin of $13.5 million.

"Weapons" posterIn its first weekend of release, the Warner Bros. release of Weapons took in $42.5 million for the studio. This proved more than enough to relegate the new film from Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures entitled Freakier Friday to a second-place finish where it made $29 million for the studio. These debuts pushed last weekend’s top film, The Fantastic Four: First Steps to third place where it added $15.5 million in its third week of release, bringing its overall total to $230.4 million for Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. Similarly, Universal Pictures saw The Bad Guys 2 drop two spots to finish in fourth with $10.4 million earned in its second weekend of release. This gives the film an overall total of $43.4 million. Meanwhile, The Naked Gun also fell two spots to land in fifth place where it brought in $8.4 million for Paramount Pictures International, giving thee film a two-week total of $33 million.

Continuing the trend of films falling two spots from last weekend’s top ten, Superman found itself in sixth place where it earned $7.8 million for Warner Brothers. This gives the film a five-week total of $331.2 million. Universal Pictures saw Jurassic World: Rebirth land in seventh place with $4.7 million after claiming fifth seven days ago. This brings the film’s six-week total to $326.8 million. Only falling one spot to land in eighth place with $2.8 million this weekend was F1: The Movie. This brings the Warner Bros. product’s seven-week total to $178.6 million. Dropping three spots this weekend, Neon’s Together fell from sixth to ninth where it brought in $2.6 million for the studio in its second week of release, giving the film a total of $17.2 million. Finally, Sketch managed to crack the top ten by bringing in $2.5 million for Angel over the course of its first weekend in wide release, giving the film an overall total of $5 million.

For the past four weeks, the films in the eighth- through tenth-places in the previous weekend’s list failed to crack the current weekend’s top ten. This weekend saw I Know What You Did Last Summer leave the top ten with a four-week total of $31.4 million taken in for Sony Pictures Releasing. Meanwhile, Paramount Pictures International’s Smurfs made $30.3 million for the studio over its four weeks in release. Finally, after nine weeks in release, How to Train Your Dragon has made $261.6 million for Universal Pictures International.
