Box Office Weekend: World Goes Jurassic Two Weeks In a Row

While it was only a few years ago that The Avengers was smashing box office records left and right, the sequel has now been overshadowed by the juggernaut of Jurassic World. The fourth film of the Jurassic Park series landed in the top spot for a second week in a row with an estimated $102 million and is likely to be the fastest movie to make $400 million by this week, the highest grossing film of the year, and with its momentum potentially the highest grossing domestic film of all-time (though it does have tough competition from Avatar). However, praise has not exactly been lacking for Inside Out, the latest from Pixar, which only managed second place with an estimated $91.1 million, but became one of the mostly highly rated films from the studio since the Toy Story franchise. While neither has released their budget costs, it is unlikely that either will be a massive box office flop (especially taking foreign box office into account)…and neither will Spy, whose Jurassic Worldestimated $10.5 million and third-place finish have brought the Melissa McCarthy comedy to $74.4 million in domestic earnings. While Spy is hiding its numbers, the last few movies headlining McCarthy (including the critically lambasted Tammy) have made all the right financial moves, all making far more than their budgets.

San Andreas dropped out of the top three with an estimated $8.2 million, though it has racked up $132.2 million domestically and a strong $414.2 million worldwide. Newcomer and critical darling Dope released with an estimated $6 million, and hopefully will be a leg up for Open Road Films, who need a hit following the flop that was the Sean Penn vehicle The Gunman.

Insidious: Chapter 3 has not reached the earnings of either of the two previous films, its estimated $4.1 million adding to a $45.4 million domestic total, but if it has a budget even slightly higher than the $5 million of the second film, it has already done quite well for itself. Pitch Perfect 2, with its estimated $3.3 million, has probably also exceeded its unreported budget with a domestic gross of $177.5 million, but unlike Insidious: Chapter 3 it has left the previous film in the dust with its megahit status.

The final three contain two worldwide box office winners and one massive flop. Mad Max: Fury Road (estimated $2.8 million) will remain mildly successful worldwide, while Avengers: Age of Ultron (estimated $2.7 million) has only Jurassic World to fear in its $1.4 billion in worldwide ticket sales. Unfortunately, director Brad Bird and star George Clooney just could not make Tomorrowland (estimated $2 million) work, its $196 million in worldwide earnings not even close to making bank on its costs.
