Box-Office Weekend: Avengers: Endgame Shatters Records

The latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and the one everything has been building towards, Avengers: Endgame opened with a three-day domestic gross of an estimated $350 million. This staggering amount gives the Marvel juggernaut the largest opening weekend box-office tally of all-time.

Avengers: Endgame posterIn a very distant second place (approximately $342 million behind) was Marvel’s other current blockbuster in the top ten, Captain Marvel, which brought in $8.1 million to give it an eight-week total of $413.6 million. The horror film The Curse of La Llorona added $7.5 million in the third spot to give it a two-week total of $41.3 million. Meanwhile, the inspirational film Breakthrough finished in fourth place with $6.3 million over the weekend to give it a two-week total of $26.1 million.

The DC super hero film Shazam! continues to do decent business, with $5.5 million this weekend, landing it in the fifth spot and delivering a four-week total of $131.1 million. The comedy Little added another $3.4 million to give it a three-week total of $35.8 million as it begins to slide out of the top ten. Dumbo, the story of the erstwhile flying elephant, meanwhile took in another $3.2 million to give it a rather disappointing five-week cumulative total of $107 million. In its fourth week of release the horror film remake Pet Sematary lifted its grand total to approximately $52.6 million with a $1.3 million showing this weekend.

Jordan Peele’s Us lifted its six-week cum to $172.8 million by taking in $1.1 million over the weekend and landing in ninth place, albeit tied with the documentary Penguins, which also brought in $1.1 million in its second week of release.

Looking forward to next weekend, a new animated feature, Uglydolls, as well as a new comedy, Long Shot, will open alongside the new thriller The Intruder in an attempt to dethrone Avengers: Endgame. A Herculean task indeed.
