Box Office Weekend: Conjuring Sequel Slams Door on Competition

It may have opened slightly below the earnings of the original, but The Conjuring 2 is proving not every sequel is a miss, scoring an estimated $40.4 million in domestic box office. It kept the fantasy epic Warcraft at bay, which opened to a disappointing domestic estimate of $24.4 million on a $160 million budget…but with big overseas returns ($261.7 million in foreign box office), the film still has a chance to do decent business. Now You See Me 2, in the meantime, has not much to speak of in terms of box office anywhere, though it managed to only do slightly less business than the original film with an estimated $23 million opening…and with only slightly worse reviews.

The Conjuring 2 PosterTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows fell to fourth with an estimated $14.8 million; the first-place finisher last week, it has taken a turn for the worse in terms of profitability, having not even earned back its $135 million budget costs. Comparatively, the worst reviewed of the X-Men series, X-Men: Apocalypse may not reach the lofty heights of its Disney-based Marvel peers, but an estimated $10 million has brought the film up to $478.5 million in worldwide gross…enough to make it likely that the franchise will continue in some shape or form, at least. Despite critical panning, Me Before You has managed to bring in enough to be profitable, an estimated $9.2 million bringing its worldwide total to $55.2 million. However, it cannot even hold a candle to The Angry Birds Movie, which, with an estimated $6.7 million, continues to astound here and worldwide.

Though falling at the bottom of the list, only one of the three last-place finishers can truly be considered a dud. Alice Through the Looking Glass appears ready to call it quits soon, an estimated $5.5 million doing little to ease the woes of the $170 million production. However, the Disney family has plenty to cover those financial pains brought in through the magnificent returns of Captain America: Civil War (estimated $4.3 million) and The Jungle Book (estimated $2.7 million). Totaled, both films have brought in $2 billion in worldwide gross.
