Box Office Weekend: Matt Damon Is Bourne Again

After sitting the last entry out, Matt Damon brought the money to the box office as he returned as Jason Bourne for the fifth movie in the series (and the second highest opening weekend, with an estimated $60 million). While not as critically regarded as earlier entries, it has still managed to make $110.1 million worldwide so far. Star Trek Beyond, in the meantime, slid into second with an estimated $24 million, but despite acclaim from critics and moviegoers alike (and $105.7 million in domestic box office alone), the $185 million production is faltering financially, only making $160.5 million worldwide. In the meantime, third-place finisher Bad Moms is already off to a decent start and likely to see good returns, with an estimated $23.4 million on the weekend against its $20 million production costs.

The Secret Life of Pets may not quite live up to the moneymaking potential of the super hit Despicable Me series (also from Illumination Studios), but with an estimated $18.2 million adding to $296.2 million in domestic gross on a $75 million budget, it is still another financial winner; Lights Out, too is a financial hit, with an estimated $10.8 million weekend, more take than doubling its $4.9 million costs, and $42.1 million earned domestically in two weeks.

Ice Age: Collision Course is looking rough on initial glance, with an estimated $10.5 million adding up to a domestic total of $42.1 million, but worldwide it has been a smash, with $253.8 million in worldwide gross. Ghostbusters, in the meantime, is looking less and less viable, an estimated $9.8 million adding to a worldwide total of $158.3 million on $144 million in costs. The mildly received Nerve may be relying on low costs to buck up its bottom line (though its actual budget has not been officially unveiled), as the thriller debuted this week with an estimated $9 million, but has earned $15.1 million so far due to a Wednesday release date.

Finally, Finding Dory earned an estimated $4.2 million and continues to cement its reputation as the highest earning animated film in domestic history, while The Legend of Tarzan, with an estimated $2.4 million weekend, will likely end its run as a bomb, the $180 million production not even doubling that amount in five weeks in the top ten.
