Box Office Weekend: Michael Bay Remains Critic Proof

For all that critics may say of the works of Michael Bay, there is no denying his ability to draw in the moviegoing public. Such is the case of Transformers: Age of Extinction. Nothing else debuted this weekend in the top ten, and nothing else even came close to its estimated $100 million in earnings, and while it did not come close domestically to earning back its $210 million budget, its worldwide earnings were more than enough to cover that deficit. In fact, while other films are still at a deficit when counting only domestic totals, only one film so far has actually not made back its money: Jersey Boys, with an estimated $7.6 million this weekend and a sixth-place finish, has yet to make back its $40 million no matter where you look.

Transformers: Age of ExtinctionOf the rest, 22 Jump Street fared the best with an estimated $15.4 million and a hefty $139.8 million in domestic ticket sales, while How to Train Your Dragon 2 picked up an estimated $13.1 million and flirts with making a domestic profit against its $145 million budget (though it has done better worldwide). Think Like a Man Too fell some distance from its lofty first-place place perch with an estimated $10.4 million, but has made back double its costs and likely to pick up a bit more than that. Maleficent made an estimated $8.2 million and crossed the $200 million threshold, while Edge of Tomorrow wonders when its day will come as it falters domestically with an estimated $5.2 million. Despite good reviews, the Tom Cruise sci-fi action spectacle has done well worldwide but falls well short of expectations in the States.

Finally, The Fault in Our Stars is now the most successful non-Twilight teen romance film; though unlikely to topple the five movie supernatural romance series, it still made an additional $4.8 million to add to a $109.5 million domestic total. X-Men: Days of Future Past did quite well during its domestic run, even considering its $200 million costs, as it picked up an estimated $3.3 million to add to its $223.4 million domestic haul. Finally, Chef continues to cling to the box office, though its success or failure remains in the air; with an estimated $1.7 million bringing its grand total to date to $19.4 million, though with no budget numbers to compare it to, it is still impossible to tell if it is an indie smash success or a flop of grand proportions.
