Box-Office Weekend: Sonic Speeds by Morbius


Yet again, a new film sits atop the box-office weekend, as Sonic the Hedgehog 2 displaced Morbius from the number one spot by a margin of $60.8 million.

"Sonic the Hedgehog 2" posterDebuting at number one, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the sequel to the 2020 film, pulled in $71 million and easily distanced itself from last week’s number one film, Morbius, which managed only $10.3 million over the weekend to land in second place. The Jared Leto vehicle now claims a two-week total of $57.1 million. Meanwhile, The Lost City dropped a spot as well, finishing in third place with $9.2 million. The film now has a three-week tally of $68.9 million. Debuting in the top ten at number four was the Michael Bay-directed Ambulance which drove home with $8.7 million to show for the weekend. In its sixth week in release, The Batman brought in $6.6 million, finishing in fifth place, and lifting its grand total to $359.1 million, moving it to #53 on the list of top domestic grosses of all time.

In its third week in release, Everything Everywhere All at Once vaulted from tenth to sixth place bringing in $6.1 million over the weekend. The film now claims a grand total of $8.4 million. Falling from fourth to seventh place was the action film Uncharted which added $2.7 million over the weekend to raise its eight-week total to $143 million. Falling one spot to finish in eighth place was the Marvel film Spider-Man: No Way Home which made $625,000 over the weekend and now sports a seventeen-week total of $803.8 million. Laying claim to ninth place was the re-release of the 1997 biopic Selena which pulled in $402,000 over the weekend. Finally, the animated Sing 2 crept back into the top ten over the weekend with $220,000 to raise its sixteen-week tally to $162.3 million.

This weekend, four films were pushed from the box-office weekend top ten. After finishing in fifth place last weekend, Gekijouban Jujutsu Kaisen 0 departed the top ten after earning a total of $29.7 million. Meanwhile, last week’s sixth-place film, RRR (Rise Roar Revolt), only has $11.1 million to claim for its time in the top ten. Channing Tatum and Dog dropped from eighth place, leaving the top ten with a grand total of $60.7 million. Lastly, the horror film, X, leaves the top ten with a total of $11 million after finishing in ninth place last weekend.
