Weekend Box-Office: Fast Five Blows Past Competition!

It’s one thing to have a slightly down weekend; it’s another to be blown so far out of the water to not even be funny. Rio slipped to second place this week with $14.4 million, not bad for a third week. Shame it can’t even begin to compare to the fantastic weekend debut of Fast Five. The action blockbuster with Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, and Paul Walker made an astounding $83.6 million, and nearly that amount in the worldwide market as well. That’s far more than every movie in the top ten’s weekend gross combined. Favorable reviews can’t be hurting its success, either.

The rest of the weekend fare is lackluster in comparison. Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Big Happy Family made $10 million, the second biggest drop-off of the weekend from its previous total (and considerable for its second week), whereas the drop to 4th for Water for Elephants wasn’t quite as drastic; the romantic drama earned $9.1 million. Buena Vista’s Prom debuted with $5 million; the plot revolves around several teenagers whose trials and tribulations unfold as the titular event approaches. Also debuting, Hoodwinked Too!: Hood vs. Evil, whose 3D ticket prices still left it (and critics) a bit flat, bringing in only $4.1 million against a reported $30 million budget.

The final four are likely to drop out of the top ten within the next week or two, but all have proven to be profitable, if not runaway hits. Soul Surfer enters week four with $3.3 million, its running totals almost double its budget (and somehow sticking in 7th place since last weekend); Insidious may have only made $2.7 million this weekend, but has made $48 million to date, far and away better than its $1.5 million budget; Hop lost nearly 80% of revenue since last weekend ($2.6 million), but joins Rio as one of two movies in the top spots to have made over $100 million total; and Source Code clings on with $2.5 million, but has made a $16 million profit in its overall earnings.
