Box-Office Weekend: “Little Mermaid” on Top

A new film claimed the top spot of the box-office weekend as The Little Mermaid debuted at number one, finishing $72.5 million ahead of the film in second place.

"The Little Mermaid" posterEarning $95.5 million over the course of its opening weekend, The Little Mermaid easily took control of the weekend box office. In a distant second place was last weekend’s top film, Fast X with $23.0 million to show for the weekend. Of course, the film does sport an overall total of $100.0 million so all is not lost. Meanwhile, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 fell to third place in its fourth weekend of release with $20.0 million to bring its overall total to $299.4 million. Dropping a spot to fourth place, The Super Mario Bros. Movie made $6.3 million over the weekend, bringing the film’s eight-week total to $558.9 million. Debuting in fifth place, with $4.6 million over the weekend, and an overall total of $7.9 million, was The Machine.

Meanwhile, About My Father debuted in sixth place with $4.3 million in its first weekend of release. Seventh place was taken by Kandahar which earned $2.4 million over the course of its opening weekend. The final debut of the weekend, You Hurt My Feelings, claimed eighth-place with $1.4 million over the weekend. Falling all the way from fifth-place last weekend to ninth this week, Evil Dead Rise brought in $1.1 million and managed to elevate its six-week total to $66.2 million. Finally, after finishing in fourth place last weekend, Book Club: The Next Chapter dropped all the way to tenth this week with $920,000. This gives the film a three-week total of $16.1 million.

For the first time in a very long while, the entire bottom half of the box-office top ten were supplanted with five newcomers. This weekend saw the departure of John Wick: Chapter 4 from the top ten as last weekend’s sixth-place film failed to make the cut this weekend. The film departs with a ten-week total of $186.4 million. After taking seventh-place last weekend, Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret failed to make the top ten and instead leaves with a five-week total of $19.6 million. Meanwhile, after amassing $4.4 million over the last two weeks, Hypnotic too departs the top ten after finishing in eighth-place last weekend. With $6.1 million earned over the last three weeks, Love Again failed to make the top ten this weekend after claiming the penultimate spot last week. Finally, with an eight-week tally of $93.1 million, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves bows out of the top ten after finishing in the final spot last weekend.
