Box Office Weekend: Guardians of the Galaxy Sequel Owns Box Office
The summer blockbuster season shot off like a rocket as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 pulled in an impressive $145 million at the box office its opening weekend. Considering that the first film made a total of $333 million domestically over the course of twenty-five weeks, it should have no problem surpassing the first film’s numbers.
Meanwhile, The Fate of the Furious dropped to second with $8.5 million, bringing its total to just a bit over $207 million. Although it probably won’t best the numbers of its predecessor, it looks as though it will ensure another installment is added to the franchise. The animated film The Boss Baby leapt a few spots to number three with $6.2 million. How to Be a Latin Lover retained a spot in the top five with $5.3 million while Beauty and the Beast finished in fifth place with $4.9 million adding to its amazing $487.6 million total.
Emma Watson continued her dominance of this week’s box office by bringing in $4 million with The Circle. Meanwhile, the Tollywood film Baahubali 2: The Conclusion took in another $3.2 million to bring its total gross to $16.2 million. Gifted brought its total take to $19.2 million with $2.1 million this past weekend. Finally, Going in Style and Smurfs: The Lost Village finished in ninth and tenth place with $1.9 and $1.8 million respectively, bringing both of their totals to an identical $40.6 million.
While the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel probably won’t be dethroned soon, next week does bring a challenger with Guy Ritchie’s take on the Arthurian legend – King Arthur: Legend of the Sword.
