Box Office Weekend: Gru and the Minions Stand Tall at Box Office

Despite delivering approximately $10 million less than the opening weekend total for its predecessor, Despicable Me 3 finished atop the weekend’s box office with just over $75 million. The third film in the popular franchise led the box office heading into the final two days of the five-day Fourth of July weekend.

Despicable Me 3 PosterEdgar Wright’s Baby Driver defied studio expectations, finishing in second with $21 million. Meanwhile, the latest installment of the Transformers series, Transformers: The Last Knight managed to pull in $17 million to bring its two-total to $102.1 million, though it appears the title may fall from the top ten rather precipitously. The summer’s best film, so far anyway, Wonder Woman, added another $16.1 million, which was good enough for fourth place and brought its five-week total to an impressive $346.6 million. It is now the third largest domestic DC Comics-based release and one of the top 100 all-time worldwide grossing movies.

The Pixar/Disney release, Cars 3 came in fifth with $9.5 million, bringing its three-week total to $120.7 million, not a bad haul despite dropping in revenue 60 percent over the last week. The new Amy Poehler/Will Ferrell-led comedy The House brought in $9.0 million in its first week, which was good enough for sixth-place but does little to make one believe it has any viable staying power, especially given the film’s abysmal critical reception. The shark-feeding-frenzy of 47 Meters Down connected with audiences again this week to bring in an additional $4.7 million to give it a three-week total to $32.6 million, which isn’t too shabby given the film’s $5 million price tag.

Sofia Coppola’s latest film, The Beguiled, starring Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst, and Elle Fanning brought in $3.3 million which raised its two-week total ever-so-slightly, which is all that more impressive since it expanded to 674 theaters from just four in its opening week. The Tom Cruise-led The Mummy took in $2.8 million to bring its four-week total to $74.5 million as it quickly rides off into the box office sunset. Closing out the top ten this week with $2.4 million is the latest entry in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dean Men Tell No Tales, which brought in $2.4 million to bring its six-week total to $165.5 million.

Looking ahead, with the summer movie onslaught in full-swing, Sony’s latest entry to the Spider-Man canon, the reboot Spider-Man: Homecoming arrives next week.
