Box Office Weekend: Star Wars: The Last Jedi Maintains Choke Hold on Competition
Star Wars: The Last Jedi continued to dominate the box office over the Christmas holiday, bringing in an additional $100.7 million over the extended weekend. This gives the film an impressive two-week total of $397.3 million. Debuting in a distant second place was Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle with a decent $55.4 million to show for its opening weekend.
Another sequel opening this past weekend was Pitch Perfect 3 to the tune of $26.5 million. Although this is presumably the end of the current iteration of the Bellas, a healthy showing at the box office could lead to further adventures. Hugh Jackman’s latest film, The Greatest Showman brought in $14 million over the holiday weekend to bring its elongated opening week total to $18.6 million. The animated, family-oriented Ferdinand closes out the holiday top five earning $9.7 million, to bring its two-week total to $29.2 million.
Debuting in the sixth spot with $7.7 million was writer/director Alexander Payne’s comedy Downsizing, starring Matt Damon and Hong Chau. Seventh-place finisher Coco continues to bring in steady returns, earning $7.4 million to bring its five-week total to $163.5 million. The Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill film Darkest Hour, finished in eighth place with $5.5 to raise its five-week total to $8.4 million after expanding to 700+ locations. The comedy Father Figures made a laughable $5.5 million in its first week of release, which was good enough for a tie Darkest Hour, but was more than likely disappointing for a film the studio probably expected better results from as it looks to disappear from the top ten next week altogether.
Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water managed to crack the top ten after expanding to 700+ locations (as did Darkest Hour), bringing in $4.3 million to raise its four-week total to $8.9 million. With none too many new films of note looming on the horizon, the top ten looks to fluctuate little in the coming weeks. But, only time will tell.
