Box-Office Weekend: Minecraft Conquers All

Yet again, a new film adorns the top spot off the box-office weekend as newcomer A Minecraft Movie claimed first place by an impressive $149.7 million margin.

“A Minecraft Movie” posterIn its first weekend in release, A Minecraft Movie made Warner Bros. $157.0 million, handily claiming first place on the box-office weekend top ten. This was more than enough to easily displace last week’s top film, A Working Man which could only muster $7.3 million for Amazon MGM Studios in its second weekend of release, lifting its total to $27.8 million. The second debut of the weekend, The Chosen: Last Supper Part 2, claimed third place with $6.7 million taken in over the last three days. Meanwhile, Disney’s Snow White fell two spots to claim fourth place this weekend with $6.1 million. This gives the Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures product a three-week total of $77.5 million. Consequently, Universal Pictures saw its The Woman in the yard drop from fourth to fifth this weekend where it added $4.5 million, bringing its two-week total to $16.7 million.

Falling a spot this weekend, A24’s Death of a Unicorn landed in sixth place where it made $2.7 million for the studio, giving the title a two-week tally of $8.5 million. Last weekend’s number three film, The Chosen: Last Supper dropped to seventh place this weekend where it brought in $1.9 million, giving the film a two-week total of $17.9 million as its second part debuted higher up in this weekend’s top ten. Neon saw its Hell of a Summer debut in eighth place where it made $1.8 million for the studio. In ninth place, Bleecker Street Media enjoyed a $1.7 million debut in the top ten from The Friend which cracked the top ten in its second weekend of release with $1.6 million; raising its overall total to $1.7 million. Finally, Walt Disney Studions Motion Pictures saw Captain America: Brave New World drop three spots to land in tenth place where it added $1.4 million, bringing its eight-week total to $199.1 million.

Four films were forced from the top ten this weekend. After two weeks in release, the GKIDS re-release of the 4K Restoration of Princess Mononoke dropped from sixth place with a total of $6.0 million taken in. Meanwhile, the eighth- through tenth-place finishers from last week also were pushed from this weekend’s top ten. After four weeks in release, the Focus Features product Black Bag leaves the top ten with a total of $20.7 million. With five weeks in tow, Mickey 17 has made Warner Bros. a total of $45.2 million. Finally, after four weeks in release, the Paramount Pictures International product Novocaine made the studio a total of $19.8 million before dropping out of the top ten this weekend.
