Box-Office Weekend: Sinners Still on Top
For a second consecutive weekend, Sinners held the top spot of the box-office weekend. This weekend, however, was by a considerably larger margin than last weekend’s $4.3 million as it bested the second-place film this weekend by $19.8 million.
In its second weekend of release, Sinners made $45.0 million for Warner Bros. as it raised its two-week total to $122.5 million. Meanwhile, the twentieth anniversary re-release of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith took second place with $25.2 million over the weekend. This brought the film’s overall gross to $405 million. Debuting in third place with $24.5 million was Amazon MGM Studios’ The Accountant 2. Just behind that, with $22.7 million, was last weekend’s second-place film, A Minecraft Movie, which dropped two spots but has still brought in $380.1 million for Warner Brothers. Debuting in fifth place with $8.0 million was the Screen Gems release Until Dawn.
After climbing to third place last weekend, the Angel Studios release The King of Kings fell to sixth place this weekend where it made $4.0 million, bringing its overall total to $54.5 million. Similarly, last weekend’s fourth-place film, The Amateur, also fell three spots to claim seventh place with $3.8 million this weekend. This gives the 20th Century Studios release a three-week total of $33.9 million. Meanwhile, A24 saw its Warfare also fall three spots and finish in eighth this weekend with $2.7 million, giving it a three-week total of $21.8 million. Newcomer Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii from Trafalgar Releasing took over ninth place with $2.6 million earned for the re-release of the concert film. Finally, A24 also saw The Legend of Ochi climb into the final spot of the top ten in its second weekend of release with $1.4 million, giving it a two-week total of $1.5 million.
This weekend saw five films thrust out of the top ten by the newcomers detailed above as last weekend’s sixth- through tenth-place films all failed to make this weekend’s list. Despite three weeks in release, and amassing $15.8 million for Universal Pictures International (UPI), Drop couldn’t keep the momentum going for a fourth weekend. After debuting in seventh place last weekend, Colorful Stage! The Movie: A Miku Who Can’t Sing couldn’t repeat its success and instead settled for an overall total of $2.9 million. Meanwhile, the 20th Anniversary Re-Release of Pride & Prejudice managed to bring in a total of $5.5 million for Focus Features over two weeks, despite falling from this weekend’s top ten. After claiming ninth place last weekend, The Chosen: Last Supper Part 2, also failed to make the top ten this weekend. Finally, after six weeks, the Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures release Disney’s Snow White falls from the top ten sporting a cumulative total of $85.7 million.
