Box-Office Weekend: Mean Girls Finishes on Top

A new film laid claim to the box-office weekend as Mean Girls bested The Beekeeper by $14.9 million to finish at number one over the elongated holiday weekend.

"Mean Girls" posterIn its first weekend in release, Mean Girls made $33.6 million for Paramount Pictures. This forced The Beekeeper to a second-place finish where it brought in $19.2 million. This was enough to knock Wonka out of the top spot as the Warner Bros. product could only put up $11.1 million in its fifth week of release, claiming third place. Standing its ground in fourth place this weekend was Migration where it brought in $8.54 million. This lifts the Columbia Pictures product’s four-week total to $88.1 million. Also sticking in its spot from last weekend was Columbia Pictures’ Anyone But You which took fourth place with $8.5 million in its fourth weekend of release. This brings the film’s overall total to $56.7 million.

Meanwhile, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom dropped three spots to land in sixth place where it added $6.4 million in its fourth weekend of release, giving the Warner Bros. film a grand tally of $109.3 million. Plummeting five spots from last weekend to land in seventh-place this weekend was Night Swim where it brought in $5.5 million. This gives the Universal Pictures International product a two-week tally of $20.0 million. This pushed The Boys in the Boat down a couple pegs as it fell to eighth place with $4.2 million; giving it a three-week total of $40.1 million. The second debut of the weekend, Sony Pictures Entertainment’s The Book of Clarence landed in ninth place where it brought in $3.0 million. Meanwhile, in its fourth weekend of release, A24’s The Iron Claw dropped a few places to take tenth place with $2.9 million. The film now sports a four-week total of $29.7 million.

Three films found themselves out of the top ten this weekend box-office as the eighth-, ninth-, and tenth-place finishers from last week failed to make the cut this weekend. With a three-week tally of $58.2 million amassed for Warner Bros., the musical remake of The Color Purple failed to make the top ten this weekend. After three weeks in release and one in which it cracked the top ten, Neon’s Ferrari sped out of the box-office weekend after amassing a total of $17.6 million. Meanwhile, following five weeks of decent returns, Poor Things departs the top ten leaving Searchlight Pictures $17.7 million richer.
