Box-Office Weekend: Jackass Steals the Crown

Three newcomers shook up the box-office weekend as Jackass Forever took first place by $13.5 just ahead of Moonfall and sent Spider-Man: No Way Home down a few spots.

Jackass Forever posterJackass Forever led the weekend with $23.5 million to show for its first three days in release. This was more than enough to best fellow newcomer, Moonfall which debuted in second place with $10 million. Meanwhile, last week’s top film, Spider-Man: No Way Home dropped to third place with $9.6 million over the weekend. The film still trails the third highest domestic grossing film of all time, Avatar, by $11.5 million as No Way Home sits at $749 million and Avatar at $760.5 million. Scream similarly fell a couple spots to finish in fourth place with $4.7 million. The latest film in the horror franchise now stands at $68.9 million over its first four weeks in release. Fifth place belonged soundly to the animated musical Sing 2 which added $4.2 million over the weekend to give the film a seven-week total of $139.6 million.

Dropping only one place to finish in sixth over the weekend was the latest “Kingsmen” film, The King’s Man which brought in $1.2 million to lift its seven-week total to $35.8 million. Last week’s third-place finisher, Redeeming Love plummeted to seventh place over the weekend making only $1 million to boost its three-week total to $8.1 million. The dramatization of NFL player Kurt Warner, American Underdog dropped one spot to finish in eighth place with $800,000. The film has now reigned in $25.9 million over the past seven weeks. The action/adventure The 355 fell from sixth to ninth place over the weekend adding $700,000 to give it a five-week total of $14.2 million. Finally, the third newcomer to the top ten, the family-friendly French/Canadian The Wolf and the Lion (Le loup et le lion), brought in $675,000 over the course of its debut weekend.

Three films were pushed from the box-office weekend top ten over the last three days. Last weekend’s eight, ninth, and tenth place movies (Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Licorice Pizza, and West Side Story respectively) were all replaced by already mentioned newcomers to the top ten. Ghostbusters: Afterlife leaves with a twelve-week total of $128.8 million, Licorice Pizza with an eleven-week tally of $12.7 million, and West Side Story with $36.7 million over nine weeks.
