It turns out that Minions & Monsters was only destined to top the box-office weekend for one week before succumbing to the new release Moana by a $22.5 million difference.
In its first weekend of release, the live-action version of Moana topped the box-office weekend top ten with a total of $43.0 million earned for Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. This pushed Universal Pictures’ Minions & Monsters to second place where it brought in $20.5 million to raise its two-week total to $108.3 million. Meanwhile, Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures also saw Toy Story 5 drop a spot to third place where it added $18.5 million to bring its four-week total to $403.8 million for the studio. In fourth place, Warner Bros. enjoyed a $13.7 million debut for the sequel Evil Dead Burn. Falling from third to fifth place, Angel’s Young Washington made $6.4 million over the weekend, giving the film a two-week total of $33.1 million.
After cracking the top ten last weekend, A24’s The Invite leapt four spots to claim sixth place with $5.7 million earned over the last three days. This brings the film’s three-week total to $7.4 million. This forced the Focus Features release Obsession to seventh place where it added $3.8 million to list its nine-week total to $253.3 million. Plummeting four spots from last weekend, Supergirl landed in eighth place where it brought in $3.6 million for Warner Bros., giving the film a three-week total of $66.0 million. Also dropping four spots was Universal Pictures’ Disclosure Day which claimed ninth place with $3.2 million. That film now sports a five-week total of $111.3 million. Finally, after a seventh-place finish a week ago, Backrooms fell to the tenth spot this weekend where it took in $1.5 million for A24, giving the film seven-week total of $194.2 million.
Two movies fell from this weekend’s top ten as last week’s eighth- and ninth-place films both dropped from this weekend’s list. After bringing in a total of $17.3 million for Paramount Pictures over the last three weeks, Jackass: Best and Last could not repeat its eighth-place finish last week and fell out of this week’s top ten. With a six-week total of $107.5 million, the Paramount Pictures release Scary Movie also fell from this weekend’s top ten after a ninth-place finish a week ago.
