Box Office Weekend: Suicide Squad Wins for the Bad Guys


Looking to be just as divisive a film as the previous DC entry Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad was lambasted by critics, but was still a draw for audiences, bringing in an estimated $135.1 million. How it will do in a second week is the real key here, but worldwide the $175 million film has brought in $267.1 million Suicide Squad Posterso far. Jason Bourne, in the meantime, took a tumble in revenue, only bringing in an estimated $22.7 million for the weekend; while it looks likely to topple The Bourne Legacy in terms of domestic revenue, it still lags behind the previous four films in the franchise. However, third-place finisher Bad Moms not only retained its spot from last week, but with an estimated $14.2 million in weekend revenue, it has managed to be quite successful on its $20 million budget, bringing in $51.1 million in domestic revenue alone.

The Secret Life of Pets also remained in fourth place, adding an estimated $11.6 million to a whopping $319.6 million in domestic earnings. Star Trek Beyond, in the meantime, has taken a tumble, and despite good reviews and good audience reception, the estimated $10.2 million weekend is not adding up to good numbers here or overseas, as the $185 million film has brought in $194.4 million in worldwide gross. It also looks like things are not well for Nine Lives…the Kevin Spacey-starring “talking cat” film has been hammered by critics, and audiences also responded with a lackluster debut of an estimated $6.5 million. Making an estimated $6 million is Lights Out, which is still a fantastic weekend for a film that cost $4.5 million and has earned $54.7 million so far.

In the final three slots are three box office busts. Nerve picked up an estimated $4.9 million, and while there is no reported budget, its $26.9 million in domestic earnings may not exactly be the numbers it needs to succeed. Ghostbusters, as well, is unlikely to make up its budget costs before it leaves theaters, an estimated $4.8 million bringing its worldwide total to $179.5 million. And while Ice Age: Collision Course made back its costs in worldwide take, its estimated $4.3 million on the weekend leaves its domestic totals looking rough, and is the least earning film in the franchise by far, even counting its decent worldwide take.
