Box Office Weekend: The Martian Rides High Again

How does a film that dropped out of first place regain that spot? Put it up against a handful of duds. While some of them failed to make the list (Bill Murray in Rock the Kasbah did not even finish close to the list, and neither did the 1980s cartoon adaptation Jem and the Holograms), even the horror-themed films failed to stop The Martian from riding high at the box office once more with an estimated $15.9 million. Only the fairly well-received Goosebumps provided any sort of competition in the form of an estimated $15.5 The Martianmillion. While the latest from Steven Spielberg, Bridge of Spies, made an estimated $11.4 million, it struggles to break even on its costs, even counting worldwide take.

While not releasing its budget, studio estimates probably had higher hopes than an estimated $10.8 million for the Vin Diesel vehicle The Last Witch Hunter. Strangely, Hotel Transylvania 2 has yet to release budget numbers when an estimated $9 million has resulted in $148.3 million in domestic gross. Things are also a mystery for Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension. The sixth entry in the series may well be a winner if it cost as much as the previous films, but an estimated $8.2 million is still the worst opening for any entry save the first (to be fair, the original opened in twelve theaters, unlike the wide releases of all the other films).

Not even critically acclaimed films are making much headway. Steve Jobs is the only movie to earn more this week than last, entering wide release in its third week. With an estimated $7.3 million, the well-received biopic is still struggling to find financial footing, having only earned $10 million against a $30 million budget. Crimson Peak and its estimated $5.6 million is not doing much to help close the gap on its $55 million budget, either.

Finally, The Intern is likely a success, as its estimated $3.9 million is a nice addition to a worldwide take of $155.8 million. Sicario is not near that level of success, but an estimated $3 million has allowed the film to break even, counting worldwide gross.
