Box-Office Weekend: Thor Reigns Supreme


The latest film from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thor: Love and Thunder debuted atop the box-office weekend, beating the second-place film by nearly $100 million.

"Thor: Love and Thunder" posterThor: Love and Thunder easily took over the box-office as it opened to $143.0 million, giving the God of Thunder his bigest opening at the box-office to date. In a very distant second-place was last weekend’s top film, Minions: The Rise of Gru, which brought in $45.6 million over the weekend to raise its overall total to $210.1 million. Similarly being pushed down a spot was Top Gun: Maverick which dropped to third place in its seventh week of release with $15.5 million over the weekend and an overall total of $597.4 million. Also getting lowered a peg by the God of Thunder was the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll as Elvis finished in fourth place with $11.0 million. This gives the Baz Luhrmann film a three-week tally of $91.1 million. Adding $8.4 million over the weekend was enough to land Jurassic World Dominion in fifth place and raise its five-week total to $350.3 million.

In its third weekend of release, The Black Phone dropped a spot to finish in sixth place with $7.7 million. This gives the film a total to date of $62.3 million. Meanwhile, the Disney/Pixar film Lightyear landed in seventh-place with $22.9 million over the weekend. The film now sports a total to $112.3 million over the last four weeks. finished in sixth-place with $7.9 million over the four-day weekend, giving the film a three-week total of $106.7 million. Eighth place was claimed by the weekend’s second debut on the top ten, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On. The animated film brought in $340,000 over the weekend to lift its three-week total to $963,000. Falling one spot to finish in ninth-place was the second Marvel film in the top ten, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which added $262,000 to give the film a ten-week total of $411.1 million. Finally, Mr. Malcolm’s List managed to hold onto the final spot of the top ten with $245,000 over the weekend, after finishing in sweventh-place last weekend. This brings the film’s two-week total to $1.6 million.

This weekend saw two films fall from the box-office top ten. Despite boasting a seven-week total of $31.8 million, the animated film The Bob’s Burgers Movie couldn’t hold onto a place in the top ten after finishing in ninth-place last weekend. The same went for Downton Abbey: A New Era which crept back into the top ten last weekend only to fall out again this weekend despite lifting the sequel’s seven-week total to $43.9 million.
