Box Office Weekend: Angry Birds Smashes Box Office

Yes, the phone app that has won the hearts (and wallets) of millions has been made into a movie, and while it may have been a mixed bag with critics, audiences made The Angry Birds Movie the hit of the weekend, bringing in an estimated $39 million. While it may not look too impressive in stateside revenue, the $73 million production has been a massive hit overseas, netting a worldwide gross of $151 million. Granted, it still pales when compared to the dethroned Captain America: Civil War, whose $33.1 million weekend estimate has totaled $1.1 billion in worldwide ticket sales in another strong performance for Marvel. In third, things have gone decently for the openings of both Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising (estimated $21.8 million) and The Nice Guys (estimated $11.3 million) from a critical standpoint (with The Nice Guys being lavished with praise), though with no reported budgets for either, it remains to be seen how well they do financially in the coming weeks.

The Jungle Book may be in fifth with an estimated $11 million, but as the third highest domestic earner currently in the top ten (with $327.5 million raked in so far), it has little to be concerned about. Money Monster, in the meantime, is sinking quickly, with an estimated $7.1 million bringing in only $27.1 million so far in revenue. The budget costs of The Darkness remain, well, in the dark, but the heavily panned supernatural horror brought in an estimated $2.4 million for a grand domestic total of $8.5 million.

Zootopia may not crack $1 billion, but the animated Disney effort did not fall too far from that mark, as an estimated $1.7 million weekend brought it to $981.8 million worldwide. The Huntsman: Winter’s War and Mother’s Day, on the other hand, will be sliding off the list as duds (if not outright bombs), with the former garnering an estimated $1.2 million on the weekend and a disappointing $158 million worldwide total on a film that needed to make almost twice that amount, while the estimated $1.1 million of Mother’s Day was not enough to cover all the costs of a $25 million budget.
