My favorite episode from Star Trek, the original series is “The Menagerie.” Because of the history, I’ve always had a soft spot for this episode. It is the only episode you really get a glimpse at past Federation operations before those that were presented by this groundbreaking series. As many of you know, the flashback contents of “Menagerie” were all part of the original pilot given to NBC for their approval.
Without it, the show wasn’t going to happen. They ultimately said no to the pilot, citing that it was too cerebral and not sexy enough — which was remedied by the introduction of the now-famous “Orion slave girl.” They did like the concept, however, and were told to take another crack at it.
The second pilot was the third episode, “Where No Man Has Gone Before,” which was much more action oriented with the inclusion of Gary Mitchell going ape shit crazy with his new powers. That sold things off, even though it wasn’t used as the originally aired pilot, which was “The Man Trap.”
The episode has some creepy undertones to it as well, outside of plot and the strange, almost noir feel, the episode has. Jeffery Hunter wasn’t available to replay Pike in the episode because of conflicts, so the Pike they used for the new shots was disfigured from exposure to Delta waves. His appearance resembles a burn victim. Chillingly, three years later Hunter was injured in an on-set explosion and later died from complications. What an omen.
Overall, the episode is just a fantastic piece of sci-fi and a great piece of ST history. You get to see Spock in his early days of service and a captain who is the furthest thing from Kirk. The plot is both a whodunit crime story as much as it is a tale of abduction on a strange planet.
I also believe the Menagerie was the first episode I saw of TOS, which is quite a way to get introduced to the whole thing.
