Box Office Weekend: The Force Awakens to Boast Highest Domestic Gross of All Time
Happy New Year! And it looks to be a very happy new year for the box office as well. Star Wars: The Force Awakens remained in first place, to likely the surprise of no one, though its success is far and away going to put Avatar to shame…in its third week, it earned an estimated $88.3 million, and is only about $20 million shy of being the highest earning domestic grosser in history…and with many weeks of revenue to come, it may be a record held for a very long time.
Things are also looking much better for Daddy’s Home…with an estimated $29 million, the critically flamed Mark Wahlberg-Will Ferrell comedy has picked up $93.6 million in gross revenue, and probably cost nowhere near the $200 million of The Force Awakens. In third, The Hateful Eight made a strong climb from its tenth-place finish last week (after real totals were counted), but its estimated $16.2 million has added to a total gross of $29.6 million, a weak beginning on a $44 million budget (especially considering the attention it has garnered lately due to its always controversial director, Quentin Tarantino).
Sadly, it would appear the upswing in box office take for the year is up (mostly for the top four), the remaining six films, save for tenth-place finisher The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 (estimated $4.6 million), are all having individually rough times. Sisters has broken even thanks to an estimated $12.6 million take, while an estimated $11.8 million has not given Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip much to sing about, not even making half as much as the third film of the series. Joy is not living up to its name with an estimated $10.4 million only bringing in $38.7 million so far on a $60 million budget. The Big Short, with an estimated $9 million, has come up…well, short, with $33 million in gross earnings. Concussion is wondering what happened, bringing in an estimated $8 million for the weekend, $25.4 million in total, and having to make up against a $35 million budget. Point Break proved a major, major disaster, an estimated $6.8 million bringing in $22.4 million domestically, and not enough worldwide to come close to earning back its shockingly high $105 million budget.
