Box Office Weekend: Don’t Breathe Exhales After Topping Box Office

While horror conventionally has a difficult time outside of October to land a coveted first-place finish, the critically acclaimed Don’t Breathe scored big with audiences, easily blowing past its $9.9 million budget with an estimated $26.1 million opening. Suicide Squad finally showed some signs of slowing down, which defied critics to become (now that The Secret Life of Pets has fallen off the list) the highest-earning film currently in the top ten, Don't Breathe Posteran estimated $12.1 million bringing it to $282.9 million in domestic totals (and $636 million worldwide). And despite a drop in revenue, Kubo and the Two Strings actually managed to jump in ranking in the top ten; though still a long way from making back its $60 million production costs, its estimated $7.9 million gave the acclaimed animated film a boost in its $24.9 million domestic earnings.

Sausage Party slid to fourth, but remains a bona-fide hit, an estimated $7.7 million raising its domestic gross to $80 million so far. Its third week take was enough to beat out the return of Jason Statham in Mechanic: Resurrection, the sequel to the 2001 film (and remake of the 1972 film), which earned low marks from critics and a debut estimate of $7.5 million. Just below, Pete’s Dragon struggles despite its critical praise, an estimated $7.3 million only adding up to $54.7 million in domestic revenue, and worldwide earnings not enough to cover its $65 million costs.

War Dogs took a tumble as it ended up with a just slightly lower $7.3 million estimate compared to Pete’s Dragon, and the film has brought in $27.8 million so far. Bad Moms managed to tread water in eighth place, bringing in an estimated $5.8 million as the comedy nears $100 million in domestic earnings. Jason Bourne (estimated $5.2 million) has bested that amount with $149.4 million brought in domestically, but it has managed to pull in more than that in overseas dollars…more than enough to put the film in good standing. However, Ben-Hur is objectively not in good standing, as the $100 million epic has floundered badly at the box office, with an estimated $4.5 million adding to a mere $19.6 million domestically so far, and only $41.4 million in total worldwide.
