Box Office Weekend: Dunkirk Beats the Emojis

With an estimated $28.1 million, Dunkirk ruled over the weekend box office for the second straight week. Director Christopher Nolan’s latest offering has now grossed over $100 million domestically while adding another $131 million from overseas business in just two weeks.

DunkirkMeanwhile, Sony’s new animated feature, The Emoji Movie, managed to slide into second place bringing in $25.7 million over the weekend despite garnering mostly scathing reviews from critics. Whether it can keep up this pace remains to be seen, but don’t bet the money emoji on it.

Girls Trip finished in third place with a respectable $20 million. The comedy has clearly struck a chord with audiences and looks to enjoy a lengthy (and profitable) stay in theaters for some time. In a disappointing fourth-place is the Charlize Theron-led action film Atomic Blonde which brought in $18.6 million in its first week of release. Spider-Man: Homecoming rounds out the top five by adding another $13.5 million to its now four-week total of $278.4 million.

War for the Planet of the Apes took sixth place with $10.4 million to bring its three-week total to $118.7 million as it begins its decline down the top ten. Despicable Me 3, however, continues to do solidly, adding another $7.7 million to raise its five-week take to $230.4 million, which lands it squarely in seventh place this week. Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets took in another $6.8 million to lift its two-week total to $30.6 million as it fell to eighth place and prepare to leave the domestic top ten sooner than it probably expected to. Baby Driver fell two spots to ninth but still brought in $4.1 million to boost its five-week domestic take to $92 million. Finally, Wonder Woman added $3.5 million to raise its domestic total to $395.4 million as it prepares to bid farewell to the top ten soon.

Next week brings the latest Stephen King adaption, The Dark Tower, starring Matthew McConaughey and Idris Elba to theaters as well as Kathryn Bigelow’s powerful new film, Detroit.
