Box-Office Weekend: Spider-Man Remains Top Dog

Spider-Man: No Way Home held the top spot of the box-office weekend for a third straight weekend. Again, the film finished atop second-place film by quite a considerable margin; this weekend by $33.1 million. As it adds to its total as the highest grossing domestic film of last year, No Way Home now sports a three-week tally of $609.9 million.

Spider-Man: No Way Home posterIn its third weekend of release, Spider-Man: No Way Home added another $52.7 million to the bank. This was more than enough to ensure dominance over Sing 2 which, despite holding onto second place for a second straight week, managed only $19.6 million over the holiday weekend. This gives the film a two-week total of $89.7 million. Climbing a spot to land in third place this weekend, was The King’s Man which, despite mixed reviews, added $4.5 million to raise its two-week tally to $19.5 million. Also moving up a spot was the Kurt Warner biopic, American Underdog which managed to finish in fourth place with $4.1 million over the weekend. The film now claims a two-week total of $15 million. In its second week of release, The Matrix Resurrections fell from third to finish in fifth place after bringing in only $3.8 million. This gives the fourth film in the Matrix series a two-week total of $30.9 million.

Holding steady in sixth place was director Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story with $2.1 million. The film now lays claim to a four-week tally of $29.6 million. Climbing back into the top ten after dropping out last weekend, is the sequel/reboot Ghostbusters: Afterlife which brought in $¼ over the weekend, lifting its seven-week total to $123.4 million. Falling one spot to finish in eighth place was Licorice Pizza which added $1.2 million to give the film a six-week total of $6.3 million. Also slipping one spot was A Journal for Jordan which debuted last weekend in eighth place, but could only manage $1.175 million this weekend, keeping it from besting Licorice Pizza. Finally, last week’s ninth-place film, the animated Encanto finished in the tenth spot with $1.1 million, giving the family-friendly film a six-week total of $91.3 million.

Unlike last weekend, when seven films departed the top ten, only one film got the boot over the holiday as ’83 took leave of the box-office weekend in only its second week after earning a grand total of $3.5 million.
