Box Office Weekend: Mockingjay Still Ahead, But Contenders Loom

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 had what would be an excellent weekend for any other film – an estimated weekend take of $51.6 million – but with an unreported budget and nearly $198.3 million in the can domestically, one wonders if Lionsgate had hoped the movie would do better, especially as it has made much less than the previous films in the series. Unfortunately, rough beginnings appear to be in vogue this November, as two other debuts fell a little flat despite excellent reviews. With both openings on a Wednesday, The Good Dinosaur, the latest from Pixar, took in an estimated $39.2 million on The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 Posterthe weekend and $55.6 million in total while Creed, the seventh in the Rocky series, brought in an estimated $30.1 million on the weekend and $42.6 million in total. With neither film releasing budget numbers, it is hard to say how well each one is doing, but considering the price tag on earlier Pixar efforts, chances are The Good Dinosaur has a lot of ground to cover.

Spectre is a worldwide hit, but looks less than spectacular in the domestic market, its estimated $12.8 million adding to a $176.1 million total on a $245 million budget. The Peanuts Movie, on the other hand, is still faltering despite its good reviews, an estimated $9.7 million still failing to recoup its $99 million budget, and by a large total. The Night Before looks to be a rough slog, with an estimated $8.2 million leaving it halfway to breaking even on its $25 million budget, while the only other film to report its budget, tenth-place finisher The Martian, is still a runaway hit with an estimated $3.3 million adding up to big dollars at home and abroad.

Of the remaining contenders, The Secret in Their Eyes has earned the most in total gross (an estimated $4.5 million bringing in $14 million so far), but whether it is in better shape than the better reviewed (and equally star-studded) Spotlight and its totals (estimated $4.5 million and $12.3 million on gross) remains to be seen. However, Brooklyn, a period drama that opened in limited release (and to rave reviews) may not be making much money, but entering wider release, its estimated $3.8 million (and $7.3 million in gross) could potentially be a good beginning for the normally low-budget Fox Searchlight studios.
