Box-Office Weekend: The Hunger Games Take Over

Lionsgate Films enjoyed the top spot of the box-office weekend as The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes debuted at number one this weekend.

"The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" posterIn its first weekend of release, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, scored $44.0 million, besting the second-place film by $12.2 million. The second debut of the weekend, Trolls Band Together took second place with $30.6 million for Universal Pictures, giving the film an extended weekend total of $31.8 million. Last weekend’d top film, The Marvels dropped to third place where it added $10.2 million to bring the Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures product’s total to $65.0 million. The horror film Thanskgiving debuted in fourth place earning $10.2 million for TriStar Pictures. Meanwhile, Five Nights at Freddy’s fell three spots to land in fifth place with $3.5 million this weekend, giving the film a four-week total of $132.6 million for Universal Pictures International.

Holding its ground in sixth place was The Holdovers with $2.7 million. This brings the Focus Features product’s four-week tally to $8.4 million. The fourth debut of the weekend, Next Goal Wins landed in seventh place where it brought in $2.5 million for Searchlight Pictures. Dropping five spots to land in eighth place this weekend was Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour with $2.4 milion. The concert film has now made $175.3 million over the last six weeks. Also falling five spots was Priscilla which claimed ninth place with $2.3 million over the weekend for A24. This gives the film a four-week tally of $16.9 million. Finally, after finishing in fifth place last weekend, Killers of the Flower Moon fell five spots to land in tenth place this weekend where it added $1.9 million, giving the Paramount Pictures product a five-week total of $63.6 million.

Four films were forced out of the top ten this weekend as the final four films on last weekend’s top ten all dropped out. After two weeks in release, Journey to Bethlehem departs the top ten after bringing in $4.3 million for Affirm Films. Paramount Pictures has gotten $65.1 million out of PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie over the last eight weeks, but it failed to crack the top ten after landing in eighth place last weekend. Despite raising its three-week total to $6.6 million, the Pantelion Films product Radical couldn’t crack the top ten again this weekend. Finally, after seven weeks in release, The Exorcist: Believer has brought in a total of $65.5 million for Universal Pictures despite dropping out of the top ten this weekend.

He currently lives in the Detroit area with his wife and their dogs.
