Box-Office Weekend: The Batman Assumes the Throne

Two films again debuted among the box-office weekend top ten. This week, however, one of those film took the top spot by a markedly wide margin as The Batman eclipsed the second-place film by $117.5 million.

"The Batman" posterThe Matt Reeves-directed The Batman debuted over the weekend, earning Warner Bros. $128.5 million. This easily bested last week’s top film Uncharted, which pulled in $11 million over its third weekend of release. The film from Sony Pictures Entertainment now sports a three-week total of $100.3 million (still $28.2 million behind The Batman’s total over the weekend). Also dropping a spot to finish in third this weekend was the Channing Tatum vehicle Dog from United Artists Releasing, which managed $6.0 million over the weekend to lift its three-week total to $40.0 million. In fourth place was the Sony Pictures Entertainment box-office behemoth Spider-Man: No Way Home which added another $4.4 million over the weekend to raise its twelve-week total to $786.5 million, so the studio probably isn’t worried the film dropped a spot over the weekend. Last week’s fourth-place film finished in fifth this weekend as Death on the Nile added $2.7 million to give the 20th Century Studios film a four-week tally of $37.1 million.

Holding firm in the sixth spot over the weekend was Sing 2 with $1.5 million. The animated family film now boasts an eleven-week total of $153.6 million for Universal Pictures. Falling two spots to finish in seventh place was Jackass Forever from Paramount Pictures. The film added $1.4 million over the weekend to give it a five-week total of $54.5 million. Climbing a spot to finish in eighth place over the weekend was the Peter Dinklage vehicle Cyrano with $684,000 over the weekend. The film now sports a two-week tally of $2.6 million for United Artists Releasing. Debuting in ninth place was the Indian film Gangubai Kathiawadi. The Paramount Pictures International release brought in $592,000 during its first weekend in release. Finally, Scream held onto the tenth spot with $570,000 over the weekend, raising the eight-week total for the Paramount Pictures release to $80.2 million.

Two films were chased from the box-office weekend top ten again this week. Last week’s seventh-place film, Marry Me departs with a four-week total of $21.4 million. The horror film Studio 666 dropped from eighth-place to vacate the top ten with a two-week total of $2.3 million.
