Box Office Weekend: Straight Outta Compton Goes Straight Up the Chart

Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation may still be doing decent enough business in its third week with an estimated $17 million, but the movie of the weekend is the critically acclaimed biopic Straight Outta Compton. With an estimated $56.1 million, the rise of rapping sensations N.W.A. led the weekend in a big way, much more so than the lackluster opening of the mildly acclaimed The Man from U.N.C.L.E., whose estimated $13.5 million Straight Outta Comptonis a rough start for director Guy Ritchie and his adaptation of the 1960s television show.

Fantastic Four is still not revealing any budget numbers, but at an estimated $8 million for a second weekend, it is likely flopping, even counting an uptick in foreign box office. Not so for The Gift, whose $5 million budget was topped with an estimated $6.5 million in a second weekend, and its $23.5 million and growing total is not too shabby (in terms of percentages, anyway). Ant-Man, in the meantime, earned an estimated $5.5 million for the weekend, and while still dragging its feet compared to other Marvel entries, it is a worldwide success and doing quite admirably considering the character is lesser known compared to other Marvel entries.

Vacation has ridden a sea of vast criticism, but an estimated $5.3 million has given the film $46.8 million in domestic earnings, which could potentially be a respectable amount, given the genre if only the budget numbers were released for comparison. Minions, on the other hand, is perfectly happy revealing its numbers, with an estimated $5.2 million adding a cherry on top of a grand $313 million domestic haul and nearing a billion in worldwide gross.

In the final two spots, Ricki and the Flash fell to ninth with an estimated $4.6 million, and with no budget released, the TriStar production should be hoping for a low budget to make its $14.7 million in earnings a worthwhile amount. Trainwreck, though, is far from its namesake, the Judd Apatow comedy raking in $97.9 million in gross so far, with a weekend estimate of $3.8 million just making things even better.
