Box Office Weekend: Martian Remains Ahead of the Game

The Martian not only remained the top draw at the box office, its estimated $37 million over the weekend brings its worldwide totals to $227.8 million; enough to ensure the widely acclaimed film is a box office success. Hotel Transylvania 2, as well, entered its second week with an estimated $20.3 million and an even higher domestic gross than The Martian, and almost as successful worldwide. Pan, on the other hand, appears unlikely to stay afloat for long. The prequel to the famous Peter Pan The Martianstory earned an estimated $15.5 million here and little else abroad, spelling near bomb status for the $150 million production. Not helping is that Pan is getting panned by most (pun intended).

The Intern sat in fourth for a second week in a row, earning an estimated $8.7 million. Whether or not it is a success, it has still pulled in twice as much as the critically acclaimed Sicario, whose estimated $7.4 million has not earned enough to break even on its $30 million budget (and whose foreign box office is not pulling enough weight). Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials is also appearing to struggle domestically with an estimated $5.3 million bringing in $70.6 million, but it has made well over twice that amount in overseas sales alone.

Things are also not looking good for the bottom of the list, save for one. The Walk brought in $3.7 million in its second week of release, but has made back only a pittance of its $35 million costs. Black Mass (estimated $3.1 million) also cannot catch a break despite its praise as it stagnates all over the world. Everest, with its estimated $3 million, at least has plenty of international backing to ensure it is not a flop. But in tenth, M. Night Shyamalan is finally having his last laugh, as the micro-budgeted The Visit (estimated $2.4 million) is turning a handsome profit, with $61.1 million domestic versus a $5 million budget.
